Essentials

Essentials provide measurable detail that can be used to drive professional learning.

Here is an example of an Essential that loads on to the ‘Genuineness’ dimension.

At least 80% of the teacher’s praise statements are authentic.

Authentic praise is praise that has all of the following characteristics:

  1. The complimentary words are deserved.
  2. The voice tone of the teacher conveys approval.
  3. The words and tone are not excessive when considering what earned the comment.
  4. The posture and facial expressions of the teacher is consistent with the message.
  5. The words and voice tone are age appropriate.
  6. The complimentary words have not been over-used within the class.

Not all Dimensions are broken into Essentials. Only ones that are deemed essential - rather than simply desirable - for a teacher's practice.
